![]() ![]() While things have improved, in the recent 10 to 15 years, and demos of sample based products from NI have improved, e.g the pianos are better, but it's taken well over 10 years to get there. That's what NI advertised - lots of pre-programmed sounds, but many of them fell flat sonically. I expected so much more from NI, yes it is great to have programmability, but for many like me who simply want great production sounds ready - in the box, a while back, it has been like mining for gold, a few nuggets, in a large mine. ![]() Komplete - should actually be called inKomplete, cos it's like walking into a restaurant, and having to also cook your own meal when you get there. ![]() Looking back, with hardware workstations, the proportion of sounds which inspired was huge, you had typically between 5 patches, many of them sounding similar, but most of them were usable in one context or another, because the combination of all the elements, multisamples, layering, effects was complete. #Sampletank 3 vs ni kontakt 5 PatchMost software driven sample based products, have not been created by those who have the skill and time and expense to create instruments, that "live" and "breath" with inherent movement in the tone like most real or simulated instruments, revealing themselves as merely - starting points, for you to do most of this required activation by yourself, which begs the question - why? Especially if your interest is to have a tool that immediately inspires you to create music, and every patch should contain an essence of that thing which we call music - a sound that takes you somewhere - i.e moves you. As some others have alluded to, we love the "programming" quality from the hardware instruments - Triton, Motif, Roland XV, and when you look into these sounds which had much smaller source sample sizes, than what is available on software driven sample based products, they are based on a Sampling + Synthesis + Layering + Effects architecture, and the strength of the products was their unique sound - i.e what the programmers conjured from the sample - giving it "life", the same as a good room, player, microphone, pre-amp, transformer, etc, and effects, give life to a good recording of a live performance. This is what I have paid for - a complete instrument, not a bunch of samples.! I was an early "investor" in NI instruments, purchasing Kontakt, Absynth, and Battery - version 1's of all three, in 2002 or 2003, long before bundles like Komplete were available, and yes while Komplete and Komplete Ultimate now represents great value as a discounted way of getting more of their products, and having invested also in some of the Spectrasonics and Synthogy (Ivory pianos), I conclude that with the exception of a few products, like Nexus, and Omnisphere (of course there will be others and this would apply to some patches and products from NI also), the instant gratification you expect from sampled instruments typically falls short.įrom what standpoint do I say this : I am not a sound designer or a designer of instruments, neither am I a wanting to be a patch programmer, I want a product that helps me compose music, and gives me great sounds as a starting point, for me to make minor or major adjustments, if I choose to. ![]() Whomever bought these simply loses the value of their investment over time. #Sampletank 3 vs ni kontakt 5 upgradeNI's habit of discontinuing products, leaves a bad taste in the mouth, and quite a bit of disrespect to those who invested in these products, and typically there are no upgrade paths, or support for these products in the ever changing operating system landscape (Windows/MAC OS). Glad I did not buy this product for this reason. I recall it also had a hardware controller option. At the moment, the Advance keyboard w/VIP is the only thing filling that workstation keyboard type of void for me.NI once had such a great product - Kore which became Kore 2, then they discontinued it, without providing any replacement. If they can get that going, and get some good sound designers to come up with great combi patches using stuff from the Komplete library, that could put them a notch above Akai and their VIP software. I'm still hoping that NI will add the ability to layer up and split sounds within their Komplete Kontrol software. The Triton Rack was probably my favorite out of all the rack modules/keyboards I use to work with. ![]()
